Hey kids, this is the place to find out how to look after our bodies and keep them fit and healthy. Your body needs fuel to keep it going and we get that fuel from the foods we eat. So it makes sense to make sure we put the right stuff in our fuel tank - our tummy. Different foods give us different nutrients so you have to eat a variety of foods.
Fruit and vegetables are the finest foods we have. They contain lots of vitamins and minerals, which the body needs to keep it efficient and clean on the inside, and to fight off disease. It is really important that you get enough fruit and vegetables, at least 2 servings of fruit and 3 of vegetables every day. A serving is the amount that fits into your hand. It is a good idea to choose different coloured fruits and vegetables rather than just eating carrots or only eating apples as each colour means the fruit or vegetable has different goodies inside it to help our bodies.
Cereals and breads are part of a group that is high in carbohydrates and you need about 4 or 5 servings a day from this group. (A serving is about a cup of cereal or a slice of bread).
Dairy products like milk, yoghurt, and cheese are great for growing bones and you should be eating 2 to 3 servings a day. (A serving size would be a cup of milk, 1 pot of yoghurt, or 2 slices of cheese).
Lean meat and fish, poultry (chicken), seafood, eggs nuts and seeds, beans and lentils form one group of foods. You should eat something from this group every day.
