Bridging education and industry
Trades at School (TAS) is a two year programme for Year 12 and 13 secondary students. We offer trades training at the OCA training centre in either the National Certificate in Building and Construction (Level 2) or the National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (Level 2).
We work with 22 Auckland secondary schools to recruit students with an interest in trades, and both qualifications are the year one equivalent for an apprenticeship in ten different trades.
Trades training element
During Year 12 and 13 students attend the OCA training centre one day a week, and complete work experience placements in industry during school holidays. NCEA credits gained through TAS can be applied to either tertiary study or year 1 of an apprenticeship.
Mentoring element
While studying a trade at OCA, students are mentored and supported throughout. OCA believes in walking alongside students and empowering them to succeed. Students receive help in an innovative and positive way to cross the bridge between school and exposure to industry, into productive jobs and careers in a trade of their choice.
Key life values and skills we focus on
TAS also includes group activities in school holidays to strengthen student relationships with mentors and other students. These activities include work experience, camps/outdoor activities, visits to community facilities, dinners and breakfast clubs along with opportunities to hear successful business people share their own experiences.
Basic construction skills and knowledge applied on a real building project.
This Level 2 course provides a pathway for students to enter into a range of trade-related occupations. It focuses on giving students practical skills for construction as they build a house on-site at OCA.
Learn to use a range of hand tools, portable power tools and machines under supervision, select and correctly install the appropriate building materials and fastenings, interpret simple drawings to obtain building dimensions, and dispose of waste material with environmental considerations.
Apply your skills by working on the construction of a non-consented timber-framed building at OCA and be able to describe the steps needed to build one. Develop the necessary safety awareness for employment on a building site.
Gain valuable workplace experience along with the skills and knowledge to become a qualified professional in the construction industry.
