OCA works in partnership with industry to deliver qualified, skilled, professional and motivated tradespeople into the workforce. Our ultimate goal is more young Pacific people in sustained, higher paid employment, providing what industry demands.
OCA graduates are qualified with NZQA levels 1-3 building and construction and mechanical engineering apprenticeship training while exhibiting traits developed through the pastoral care and mentoring elements of our programme. These elements provide students with an understanding of the whole transition process from school to employment, through our partnership with schools, with the tertiary institutions providing trades training and individual employers.
By empowering and supporting Pasifika families to aspire to better achievement in education through our PTE programmes and supporting them to be the best they can be as individuals, the result is a Pasifika person who will be an outstanding student, employee, parent and leader in their employment within their families and communities.
The mechanical engineering sector leads to a range of careers including design and giving advice on the building and repair of machines and tools. Mechanical engineers also investigate problems and faults with machinery, and study ways to improve manufacturing and energy production. OCA graduates of the Level 3 Certificate in Mechanical Engineering develop skills in fitting and machining, learn how to make engineering tools, learn skills in general and maintenance engineering, develop technical drawing skills, and welding skills.
The construction sector is one of the largest sectors in the economy, employing 171,000 people, which is over 7% of NZ’s workforce. Jobs can range from house-building to construction of basic infrastructure and large building developments. The unprecedented workload from the Christchurch rebuild and from Auckland is driving demand for more skills than ever before in New Zealand. OCA graduates of the Level 3 Certificate in Construction learn about framing, roofing, cladding, internal linings, fitting windows and hanging doors. They also gain an understanding of the health and safety issues in the building industry, and develop knowledge of building codes and regulations.
